Dental problems are no fun.

The good news is that most of them can be treated and/or easily prevented. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily combined with good diet and regular dental check-ups will heal a great deal in preventing dental problems.

Here is a short list of some of the most common dental problems:

Bad Breath

Bad breath, also called halitosis, is pretty common condition and can be caused by various reasons. According to dental studies, nearly 85% of patients with persistent halitosis have a underlying dental condition that is the main reason for the unpleasant condition.

Gum disease, cavities, poor oral hygiene, cancerous process, dry mouth and bacteria are some of the most common dental problems that can trigger and cause bad breath. Using mouthwash to cover up bad breath when a dental problem is present will only mask the odor and not cure it. If you suffer from chronic bad breath, visit your dentist to rule out any of these problems.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, also known as cavities or caries, is among the most prevalent diseases. Tooth decay occurs when plaque (sticky film-like substance that forms on teeth) interacts with sugars and starches from food. The combo produces acids, which attack tooth enamel and cause cavities and discoloration of the teeth.

The best way to prevent tooth decay is good oral hygiene! Brushing after every meal or at least twice a day, flossing daily and going to your regular dental check-ups is a good way to start. Eating healthy foods and avoiding sugary snacks or drinks is very helpful in order to to prevent caries.

Gum (Periodontal) Disease

Gum disease is an infection in the gums surrounding the teeth. Gum disease is also one of the main causes of tooth loss among adults. Studies have shown that periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is linked to heart attacks and strokes.

There are two major stages of gum disease - gingivitis and periodontitis. Regular prophylactic dental check-ups and good oral health habits such as brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily will heal preventing gum disease.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is very serious and deadly disease. It affects millions of people every year. The US Oral Cancer Foundation estimates that over 300,000 new cases are diagnosed every year worldwide. Cancer is a serious disease, which pertains to the mouth, lips or throat. It is often highly curable and maintainable when diagnosed and treated in early stage.

Mouth Sores

There are several different types of mouth sores. While they can be unlpleasant and bothersome, they are often quick to heal if treated properly. Common mouth sores are i.e. canker sores, fever blisters, cold sores, ulcers and thrush.

Unless a sore lasts more than a week or two, most of the time it’s really nothing serious to worry about. However if it doesn’t disappear on its own and somehow bothers you, don’t hesitate to contact a dentist to take a look.

Tooth Erosion

Tooth erosion is a loss of tooth structure. It’s usually caused by acid which is attacking the tooth enamel. Erosion signs and symptoms can range from sensitivity to more severe problems. Erosion of the teeth is far more common than people might think. Good news is it’s easily prevented.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a common problem that means experiencing sharp pain or discomfort to your teeth from different foods or temperature change – i.e. sweets, snacks, cold air, hot drinks, cold drinks, ice cream, etc. Some people with sensitive teeth even experience discomfort while brushing and flossing. Sensitive teeth can be treated in numerous ways, depending on the specifics.

Pulpitis

Pulpitis is an inflammation of dental pulp tissue. Pulpitis is mainly caused by bacteria infection which itself is a secondary development of caries (tooth decay).

The pulp contains the blood vessels the nerves and connective tissue inside a tooth and provides the tooth's blood and nutrients.

Missing Teeth

Studies show that the average adult between the ages of 20 and 64 has three or more decayed or missing teeth. Luckily there are plenty of ways to correct the problem. The large space between missing teeth may affect the speech, as well as eating food. Even if it’s not noticeable, a missing molar can affect the way youchew. Remaining teeth often shift and in some cases, bone loss can occur around a missing tooth.

Here are some options to treat, fix or replace lost teeth:

• Bridges

Anchored to adjacent teeth, can be removable or fixed.

• Dentures

An option if you’ve lost all or most of your teeth.

• Implants

Most similar to a natural tooth.

Fistula

In medical terms, a fistula is defined as a non-natural or non pre-existing tube connecting the inflammation centre or an organ with the interior body parts and/ or exterior surface of the body. When inflammation persists at a particular site inside the body for a long period, it creates puss and may eventually lead to the formation of a puss corridor. This puss corridor then reaches the surface and causes a gum boil.

Treating dental abscesses may involve root canal treatments or in more severe cases be followed with root tip resection. In this procedure, dental abscesses are operated and the root tip is removed along with the fistula corridor formed due to the infection. Fistula corridors in dental abscesses tend to heal naturally when the cause has been removed.

Dental abscess

A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that can be very painful. Abscess often contain pus. This type of infection is usually located in the edge of the root of a tooth or at gum level.

If infection comes from gums, the abscess occurs due to periodontitis (aka gum disease). If not treated, dental abscess can reach the jawbone and cause severe complications.
